She graduated from Murray State University with a B.A. She was an actor in the theater in 2003. Her middle name, "Chrishell", is an evocative term created from the unusual circumstances of her birth. Her mother was born at the Shell station, and Chris helped with the birth. In her book, Strause denies the gossip on her birth. She claimed that her mother was having car problems and decided to stop at a petrol station. In the waiting area at the car station, she went into pre-labor and the car attendant genuinely helped her to reach a hospital. Strause was born in a hospital. Prior to knowing she was expecting, her mother broke up with her biological father who was half Japanese and half Spanish. Jeff is her stepson. Chrishell Strause missed a full year of middle school because she was confined in tent. Strause remembers the time she washed her hair in a river, eating food stamps, and hiding her true identity from her peers. When she turned 10 years old, her parents "struggled with addictions and mental health." She then became a member of the Worldwide Church of God. Strause describes her mother as self-righteous and uncontrollable, and she has never had an income steady.
